oil pressure sending unit
2001 ranger 2.3 liter 5 speed 167k miles.
I see the oil gauge needle occasionally flicker an 1/8 inch or so. I heard this is a dummy gauge and it either has pressure or it does not. I was going to swap out unit.
I found it next to the oil filter under truck.
Any suggestions /tips in swapping this sending unit out?
Thanks
Yes, I believe you are correct: gauge is meant to show if there is pressure or if there isn't. I saw a link at the Ranger Station to a guy who builds 2.3L engines and has a trick to convert the dummy gauge into a functional gauge by soldering in a resistor or something. It's been a while, so I don't recall the details now.
Flicker could mean a bad gauge, bad connection, or it dies out for a second because the pressure drops. You may need to do some more trouble shooting to diagnose the issue properly.
Good luck!

But as a safety precaution, you should check your oil pressure just to make sure.
I installed a 3 pod A-pillar unit and added a rpm, oil pressure and volt meter gauge. Love it.
