Finally Changed Odometer Bulb

2003 Escape the bulb behind the odometer has been out for at least a year, finally got around to changing as per instructions I found on this forum, thanks guys.

Actually it was fairly easy and straight forward.

I think it took me longer to get my tools out and put them away and reset my radio stations than what it took to change the bulb.

Here you go:

Before disconnecting the battery, lower your steering wheel as far as it will go and set your shift lever that is on the column on 2003’s to 1st gear, this will get it out of the way when removing the cluster. Also you can lower the windshield washer control arm after disconnecting the battery.

There are two 7mm screws that hold the trim in around the instrument cluster at the top, take them out and the panel. (Some models may have 2 Phillips screws instead of 7mm)

At that point there are 4 small bolts that hold the cluster in, 7mm again. Take them out and then carefully lean the cluster top towards you, and even more carefully ease out the three electrical connectors, two smaller ones on the left and a larger one on the right. (Some vehicles may only have 2 connectors. Mine had 3).

After disconnecting the three (or 2) connections pull the whole cluster out and change the bulb.

The lamp is a miniature #74.

The lamp is in a socket on the back of cluster. Give the socket a 1/4 turn and remove it. The lamp can then be pulled out of the socket and the new lamp put back in.

If you never changed the bulb before, turning it that ¼ turn may be difficult being in the cluster for 8 years or so. I used an ordinary plier and gently turned the socket until it turned and came out. The burnt out bulb also did not want to come out easily and I broke it in the socket, but no big deal, just grab the rest of it with a needle nose pliers and pull it out.

After inserting the new bulb, replace the socket with the new bulb back in the cluster and turn ¼ turn until it locks in place.

Then just reverse the directions above to put all back together.

You will see when you do this how easy it is.

Thumbs up

I know this an old thread, but I wanted to thank tonyford for the instructions.

I picked up a 2003 Escape about a year ago and have the same issue.

It's gonna be good to see the odometer & shift indicator at night!!

Thanks again - Rondo
