Negative Cable...

After cleaning and painting the battery area on my '84..I see the negative cable is ready to replace.. I have a length of new proper battery cable..,and some brass ends.... but how do I make the connection on the frame where the tab holds the cable ?..I know it grounds there, and on the starter bolt. Is it just a metal to metal contact..held by the tab ?...

The original that piece is crimped onto a spot where the insulation is stripped. Most people usually just make it two cables and use that bolt as a junction point

Correct. Metal to metal contact on the tab to the wire cable itself.

What I usually do is remove the tab from the old cable, and cut the insulation off the new cable in the right place, and crimp the tab on the cable. Then use shrink wrapping and/or electrical tape to keep the connection clean.

This gives a factory looking replacement.
