I've got an 04 TDI. I've had it for 4 years and have put 60k miles on it. I'm at 137k now. I've replaced the timing belt at 100k for $650. One new set of tires. Standard oil and filter changes. Other than that, no other issues. I'm getting 37 mpg city and 49 mpg highway.
A co-worker has a TDI Jetta. 50mpg must be nice. I wish they would put a small diesel engine in a ranger-size 4x4 pickup. Then I would buy one of those. The 1 ton is nice but I don't need it every day and theres no sense in racking up miles on it when I don't need it. I don't want anything other than a 4x4 truck though and none of them get stellar fuel mileage. My 6.7 is the highest I've ever had - over 17mpg. Thats not much compared to 50mpg.
What's even nicer is that I'm self employed and use my TDI for short trips around town when I don't need my truck. I've only had to fill it up six times this year-600 miles a tank is great. Took it to Key West last year and drove it 3000 miles for under $200.
I'm considering getting one of these. Probably wait until the 2012 models hit the showroom and buy a 2011 Passat TDI.
I spend about $300/month on fuel right now, and don't want to put any more miles on my truck. At this pace I'll be putting on +20k/year
does anybody have a TDI? are they reliable?
We got a TDI sportwagen back in February. Average mileage is around 34mpg around town plus a little interstate driving every week. There have been some issues with the high pressure fuel pumps on some but VW and the NTSA are on it. I run 5% bio for the added lubricity. So far we have 10,000 trouble free miles. I think the new Passat will use adblue for the DPF filter, ours used post combustion fuel injection.Head on over to myturbodiesel.com - VW TDI forum, Audi TDI forum, DIY, FAQ, and buying guides and TDIClub Forums - Powered by vBulletin for more info.
I have had several TDI's and so have my parents and brother. They have all been very reliable, if you keep up with maintenance. A lot of complaints I hear are from people who don't think routine maint. is part of vehicle ownership
3 time jetta tdi owner - current one (06) has 112k on it. Other than a temp sensor ,an alt and a timing belt change only routine maint has been req. The alt was
fine just the brushes were gone. Keep up with the maint has and they are good. Early tdi's had some turbo issues but as long as you kept up with oil changes even they were ok. 1pc of advice - buy one only if you have a good local vw mechanic that knows tdi's - most vs dealers are not that great at service and can be very pricey. Otherwise get the manual and the vagcom (sp?) Scan tool so you can do the service. Fyi: Just changing the trans fluid on an auto trans req the scan tool. Also you'll need to acquire some vw specific tools to work on some things.
I have an 04 VW Jetta TDI that I love. One of the best vehicles I've ever owned. Bought the car used 4 yrs ago w/ 32k on it. It now has 80k. In the short time I've had it, I've saved enough $$ on fuel to practically pay for the car,.......(considering the fuel expense of the other vehicle it replaced).
Bought a 2010 Jetta TDI Cup Car on December 31 2010.
Love the car
Presently get only 36 -38 mpg, have heard the 50 + mpg from some people.
I've only got 5K on mine at the present time.
+ 1 on the finding a good dealer, have heard horror stories about VW dealers using the wrong oil during oil change :-(

I asked my dealer to show me the oil they use...He scored 10 out of 10
I have a 2011 VW touareg TDI and love it, very nice inside and out, 225 HP 406 TQ, 3.0 turbo diesel, tows 7700 pounds. But thats if you want to spend at least $47,000.

Regarding Passat TDI's (03-05), there's a ticking time bomb in the balance shaft chain system, it's the automatic adjuster/follower. They have a history of failure 60k-80K. The oil pump is driven off this chain. The upgraded system is gear driven (a VW service upgrade) that costs north of $2500 (including labor).
Glad I had mine done as it was shot when pulled at 90k. Amazingly the chain didn't pop off the gears or the motor would have been toast.
