starter issues

I have a 74 f350 with a 460 engine and a 4 speed manual tran (not the original engine but i think the tranny is) i replaced 2 starters in a week as they both had the bendix teeth ground off ! I checked the flywheel and all teeth look perfect ! Both times the starter worked great on first couple starts but then the grinding starts wich i assume is the bindix staying ingaged. I have tried using the shim plate but that didnt help? Desperate for a resolution! thanks Don

Wondering what led up to this ? Did the origional one go bad then the replacements teeth ground off ? There are 2 different tooth counts for the starter Bendix. I (think) one is 9 the other 11.

Yes, the starter went out and i have replaced it with 2 replacements but i never kept the first one it was sent for core. So i dont know what the tooth count was.

Being that the 460 was never offered with a 4spd who knows what teeth count it should have !You may want to understand this 1973-1979 Ford Truck 460 V-8 Swap
