I own a 77 F100 with a 460 V8 conversion. I had the clutch replaced and the starter's been giving me problems ever since (I've replaced two starters in a couple of weeks). Evidently it's not seated right and sounds like a meat grinder. My mechanic tells me it's normal for 460 and it just needs to be loosened and retightened. All this does not seem right...
It never did this before. Are there shims that need to be installed? Is there a correct starter for this vehicle that a regular part store is not listing?? Anyone with the same issues or solutions?
make sure the engine plate is between the bell housing and the engine block. It's that 1/16" or so plate. This is what spaces the starter to engage the flywheel correctly. Most people I know tend to have forgotten to put that plate in there..and I've done it too. Otherwise they make starter shims. If this is what happened, then you'll want to look at the flywheel teeth and make certain you didn't round them off. And yes, you need the right starter for your application. including the year of the flywheel for tooth count.
When you remove the starter, is the gear stripped? Because you can replace the starter drive for $5 if it is, instead of the whole starter. Otherwise, you may have gotten the wrong starter or a couple bad starters. My new starter was actually a rebuild, and it doesn't crank my 460 as good as the old starter used to. My next starter will be a high torque mini starter, even though I know they cost a lot more. Warm 460s are even harder to start. I don't have much faith in rebuilt starters.
