u joint replace job

As some of you know my trucks in a shop right now (has been forever). I'm finally at a shop that knows older trucks and suspension/4X4 stuff. But they told me they found my passenger side u joint is worn and should be replaced. Its not related to the accident so insurance wont cover it so I'd like to fix it myself.
Who's done this and how bad is it. I have a D50 and i know i'll need to rent a ball joint press. but what else is involved and is this a job for a garage mechanic
Thanks in advance

Its not as bad as the middle one obviously but still a job. Ive only done a couple one was a royal pain but the other came apart about like you would expect.

its not one of the funner jobs but not as bad as replacing the ball joints.
yeah,it's for sure something you can do yourself and save lots of $ though.
it's a good idea to do both outer wheel U-joints at the same time.if the center seems ok,then leave it alone.it's harder and doesn't ware as much as the outer's.

Its not hard at all, you will need a 6 tang wheel bearing socket, but thats really about all the special tools you will need.

Make sure you replace all the seals! I replaced all of them but the inner ones and 2 days later i found puddles at either end of my axles. I had a whole mess of parts i replaced at the same time and totally forget them.

Here is a link to a good writeup. You would not have to go as far as the ball joints.

I've done it. IIRC, you can choose to only replace your outer u-joint since there's a slip joint on that long side. You have to pull your hub and disconnect the steering from the knuckle to get it out. Since you'll be in there, you should consider doing all three u-joints. One side is clipped in which requires pulling the front diff. Perhaps you could replace the u-joint w/o pulling the axle. If you pull the axle out of the diff, you could run into an inner axle seal leak after you button the front end back up and you'll be pulling it apart again.

I have done this on 3 trucks and never had a seal leak, I just put some grease on the end of the shaft and carefully slid it though, maybe I get lucky.

I replaced my inner axle seals/bearing when I rebuilt the front end because both sides were leaking. My PSD's inner axle seals leaked after I did ball joints and u-joints. That was a real PITA.

Turbill, if you're on my side of the state (western) when you do this, I do have a shop press in my garage and can give you a hand.

I'd spray them down with some penetrating oil a few times to loosen things up a bit. Should make it a little easier when you tear it apart.
