Ok, I’ve searched this forum and I can’t seem to find answers that don’t actually leave me more confused than when I started.
Head stud replacement:
first, regardless of anyone’s opinion concerning whether or not someone should change head studs one at a time, my question is CAN you change the head studs one at a time on a 2004 Excursion? If it can’t even be done then the debate over someone’s opinion of whether it should be done or not is a moot point.
Second, is there a reliable method to determine if the head studs on my used truck have already been replaced/upgraded? Realistically speaking, since the head studs are not a $0.50 item off the shelf and the time required to pull the head (or even just one stud) is more than just a couple minutes, I would hate to purchase them only to find out that they were already replaced.
Yes they can be changed one at a time without removing the body or engine. There is an FTE member or two that have done it. Search for member DSMMH, as he did a good write up on the procedure.
The bottom row of bolts/ studs are outside the valve cover and can be visually checked to see if they've already been changed. A strong flashlight helps to locate and identify what's in there.

Thanks! That is right up the ally of what I was after...
(now as I risk sounding like a REAL newbie)
Then I guess my next question is what does a stock stud head look like compaired to the ARP? Anyone have any pictures to compair to?
