Is there any way to externally tell the difference between a 351m and a 400?

That link above will help you, but to answer your question: No. Unless you saw it come off the assembly line and then the sticker on the aircleaner could probably be trusted.
351 = 3.50" stroke,
400 = 4". It's hard to measure them externally due to the plug angle, so they say, but you may be able to get a wire down the hole and figure it out.
