390 Backfire

I have a 73 F100 with a 390. Truck has sat for a while but I just rebuilt the carb, replaced fuel pump and filter and coolant system. The truck will run strong but then out of no where will let out a huge backfire out the tailpipe and stop running. After pumping the accelerator a bunch it will fire up but it might be 10 miles or 50 and it will do the same thing again. Seems to be most active while under a load. Any Ideas?

Carb settings or timing. With the description I would lean torwards timing.

Thanks for the reply. When I initially got it running after it had sat for a year, I set the timiing at 6. Is there a better setting?

Set it at 12 to 14. Warm her up drive her around a bit and push on the gas hard if she doesn't ping you should be good to go.
