390 not running good

390 not running good
this is a 390 4v
ok, well first off my carb is shot. back float is empty.
second problem is:
- Under 10 mph, she will die on me. i thought maybe timing or i was flooding her.
so i parked her over at my dads. i messed with the timing some, and the idle.
- i got her to idle but hse is real rough. while she idles i can hear her firing. or somthing like that. (best way is i hear a tap from some of the cylinders)
- when i open the throttle, i hear a ping.
needsless to say im not driving her now, but any ideas on whats going on?

Well, here's a few of questions to start things off.
1. What carb is on it, and when was the last time it was rebuilt?
2. With the vacuum advance line off and plugged, where is the timing at?
3. Is the fuel filter plugged?

Does that 650 holley have the Equalizer tube on it that run from the front bowl to the back one? if so..it might be plugged up and like Rusty said,check your fuel filter also..
Let us know what you find... You could also have a weak fuel pump?
