I have a 2001 F250 7.3l with 180,000 lbs. This year I've had to change the GPR three time. Each time the truck would not start (crank but no fire) Each time I've change the GPR it starts right up. I've talked to a Ford service tech and he couldn't tell me why the GPR would be going out so often. Has anyone else had this problem and is there something else I need to do to fix this issue. Outside temp has ranged from 20F to 80F.
Do the Stancor.. Welcome to guzzle's Stancor GPR replacement Mod Web Page Mine went out a couple times in one year.. Until i swapped it out with a stancor.. One other thing you can do is to ohm out the glow plugs.. Make sure none are shorted or open. easy enough to do also.
Check/change your plugs and put in a stancor and you will be done with it.
I second what Dan says. Ohm out the GPs. A dead short to ground will draw more current then the OEM GPR contacts can handle causing severe pitting.
Also the Stancor is about half the price of an OEM GPR and it's heavier duty.
This is what my stock GPR looked like when it failed at 82K. It would operate but not conduct voltage to GPs. Just too badly pitted.
I used Guzzle's write-up but decided to mount the Stancor vertically. A little more work but that is the manufacturer's sugested mounting position to better ensure the contactor ring turns to a new position each time the relay operates. The Stancor is basically the same design as the OEM GPR. It uses a contactor ring to make contact across the always hot post and the post that feeds voltage to the GPs. That ring should turn slightly each time the relay operates. If mounted hoizontally it would be easier for the contactor ring to get stuck in one position and then always use the same 2 spots on the ring for contact, which will shorten it's service life.
Nothing wrong with monting it horizontally. Will work just fine and most likely last for years, I just had the materials and time to mount it vertically.
