I think they both are hydraulic clutch, but good trans in my opinion, and if I'm correct they have lower 1st gears than the 3od. Was thinking about swapping one into my 85 with the same setup you have. But mine is already hydraulic and someone swapped in 3.55 rear gears.
I've been told it's a direct swap as long as you go with the early one that had a speedo drive gear, even suppose to be about the same length. Later models used an electric speedo that ran off a tone ring. But you will have to change to a hydraulic clutch setup.
Both the 5 speed transmissions (Mazda & ZF) are hydraulic clutch.
The earlier 4 speeds (both granny & overdrive) can be set up with either mechanical or hydraulic clutches.
I'm converting from a C6 to a manual soon & will go with mechanical linkages to avoid the cracking firewall problems of the hydraulic clutch trucks.
Any of the 4 speed granny transmissions (T18, T19 or NP435) will bolt up to your bellhousing - you might have to turn your rear cross-member, or use some of the other holes already in it - but top gear is only 1:1 (no overdrive) on all of these.
Also, you may need to alter/swap your driveshaft
There are some differences in gear ratios - some T19, & all Ford-version T18 & NP435's have a granny low (6.3:1 & 6.69:1 ) - these trannys also have a big jump between 3rd & 4th.
But some T19's have a higher-speed low gear (4:1) with 2nd/3rd/4th more evenly spaced.
Low gear is synchromesh on the T19, but not on the T18 or NP435.
All three are heavy & durable.
Be careful to get the Ford version of these transmissions - other brands used them too, with some differences - e.g. bolt patterns, input shaft lengths/splines etc.
The low-first 4 speeds would be a bit better than your current set up.
The Mazda's 3.91 first would barely be better than your current 3.25, but gear spacing is much better.
Serving suggestion: Go nuts with a 3.50 or 3.70 or even 4.10 9 inch axle from a truck of your same vintage, AND the Mazda box. Sure, you'll need to fiddle with the juice clutch, but it will be like a different truck.
Start with the 9".
I had your set up with 3.50 and 31s, and it was pretty doggy, thus my suggestion for the shorter gears.
