What parts are needed to convert my 78 F-150 4x4 w/PS and 351M to a Saginaw pump. I know that some vans of this genre used a Saginaw pump with the 351M/400, but if anyone has more specific information or has done it, please share. I would like to upgrade to a better pump before putting on my hydrualic winch. Thanks.
Napa has the ford Heavy Duty pump. which is the old style GM pump for around $110. i just put one on my truck because i also have a winch that it works off of. i got mine from checker auto for $95.
it is a bolt in. you also use orig hose's and brackets.
The way I understood it is that the Ford pump is just that. The whiny, leak prone unit that it is. I thought the Saginaw pump was never used in the 73-79 series. So, what is the deal? F350, is your pump a Saginaw, or just a heavy duty Ford style? A little clarification would help. Thanks.
my pump is a GM saginaw. it is the old style one. i had the same pump on my 67 Chevelle. it is NOT the plastic ford pump. call some of your auto parts store's and see who has it, i know napa has it. it's listed as "ford heavy duty". it has a round reservoir base with a 4 or 5 inch high oval spout going striaght up and the cap is on top, and it's metal.
Ford350, did you have the ford style and then just bolted up the HD version, or did you truck already have the HD version? I need to know this because I thought the brackets were different for the Saginaw pump. Thanks.
i had the ford plastic pump in my truck when i bought it. and the truck also had the 400 motor in it and the winch. but the power steering was real hard to turn when i was going real slow like pulling in to parking lot etc... so i searched around for a better pump because i have the winch. i even call AGR in TX. they told me they didn't make a pump for my truck. so i went to buy the orig plastic one. when i was at Checker Auto the guy at the counter asked me if i wanted the heavy duty one. i said hell yeah. thats what i've been trying to get but nobody make's one. thats when he told me that ford offered a heavy duty pump. it use's the orig bracket's and hose. mine came with an 90* adapter on the back of the pump for the ford hose. it was a bolt it unit. i haven't tried it yet because i got the motor rebuilt and i just got it fired up this past weekend, it sounds AWESOME. but i have alittle more work to do on it before i can drive it. send me an email and i'll try to send you a picture of it. my address is my user name @WebTv.Net
This piece of info should quiet down many howling Fords...
I will have to pull apart a plastic pump and compare it to the Saginaw unit and see if I can figure out why the Ford unit howls so easily. The howling is caused by fluid bypassing back from the high pressure side of the pump to the low pressure side. It usually occurs because of scratches in the valve plate inside the pump caused by dirt or grit in the fluid. I use an inline filter anytime I service the power steering system, it seems to help.
