What years and models of rear ends will go under a 1984 F150 without welding or major mods? I just switched out all the U-joints and the carrier bearing and when I switch from reverse to drive, the rear end clangs really loud. I know to have it rebuild is a major expense that I can't afford now. Thanks in advance and if I've left anything out, please ask.
Slow down - you might be getting a head of yourself. If you don't want a rebuild and are planning on throwing a junkyard axle assembly under it, who's to say you won't have any other problems with a used rear end?
Was this noise there before the new carrier bearings and the u-joints were the first attempt in chasing the noise?
Or newly developed after you did the carrier bearings because you had the third member apart and backlash or bearing preloads are out (depending how far you disassembled for bearing replacement)?
You could identify the current axle you're having problems with...
According to the rear end tag, it's a WDR-D Bronco 83 Ford F100, F150 Pickup '83 - 3.55 ratio - 8 1/2 in - NL - 31 spline. I didn't do anything to the third member at all. The noise was extremely worse before the u-joints were installed. I think I quieted the drive line down enough to hear the rear end noise. Thanks for the help.
If the rearend has a rear cover with bolts, you have a 8.8. If it has no rear cover and no rear bolts, then it's a 9 inch. For a direct swap, stay with the same type rearend.

It has a back cover like a chevy rear end. Thanks for the clarification. What years will bolt up without doing any cutting and welding? Thanks again, you guys rock.
Mid 80's to Mid 90's f150's and Broncos. The early 80's had more 9 inchers, and then they slowly phased in the 8.8. You will find various sizes of brake shoes as options for the same rearend, but you can swap your brakes and drums over to the new rearend if that matters.
1978? That's a little bit out of the 1980 thru mid 90's range, but it might fit. You may need to change your driveshaft out if the snout of the rearend is a different length than the 8.8 you had.
im not trying to hijack anyones thread but does anyone if the ford 8.8 on our trucks are 31 or 28 splines because ive been wanting to get a locker for my diff, my truck is a 1986 if that helps.
OK So far the OD isn't having a fit with those gears but I drive freeway for the most part. I do plan on a different ratio soon. The rear end bolted right in, the only change I had to do was keep my original E-brake cables and the ujoint is a oddball but Oriley's had one in stock. My 8.8 has 31 spline axles but it's a non-locker.
