hi; i need some help with my truck is rear end, i have a 2000 f-150 5.4 auto with a positraction or limited slip rear end, the truck has 95000 miles, i have noticed a grawling noise between 30 to 65 mph,the mechanic says it needs a complete rear end overhaul he charges $1200 parts and labor.
my question: is this noise normal and do nothing about it or should i fix it and try to prevent larger rear end problems problems.
any help will be appreciated.
The growling noise you're hearing is not normal and indicates either a bearing is on its way out or gear mesh problems but this is unlikely since nothing has been changed in the rear end to goof up the gears. To my knowlege a LS rear end won't make any noises like this when the clutches wear, it'll just start acting like an open carrier. You should definitely get it taken care of because if it's a failing bearing it could cause more damage and leave you stranded. Most likely it's a wheel bearing. You might try jacking up the rear end with the tranny in neutral and spin the wheels by hand. They should spin very smoothly and make no grinding/growling noises. If you find a noise on one side or both it could indicate tht the bearing on that side is going out. New bearings for both sides shouldn't be more than about $120 and then the install fee if you can't do it yourself. Carrier or pinion bearings COULD be the problem but this is unlikely.
$1200 sounds like an absurd price to me. If you have to have the work done at a shop I'd take it to a different shop and find out exactly what the problem is and have them fix it, not "overhaul" the whole axle. I think your mechanic is just hoping for some quick $$.
