I just purchased a 1988 Ranger 2.9. It sat for a few years and I wanted to check everything out before I start it. The gauges are not working so I don't know if there is fuel in it or not. I have juice to the battery and everything else seems to be fine. I was wondering if it is a ground problem or is there a fuse behind the gauge cluster?
Thanks for any help you can give. It's starting to drive me a little nuts!
Vehicles that sit for years invariably wind up with ground problems from rust and corrosion, start at the battery and check every ground wire, cable and strap.........chances are, one of these is your problem.
Does everything else (lights, radio, wipers, etc.) work? Does the engine crank over, start and run? If some items work but not others, you may have one or more corroded fuses. If the engine doesn't crank, check to see that the starter relay on the passenger side fender, inside, is ok by checking small wire connector and each of the big connectors. Have someone turn the key to the start position whine you listen to hear a click from the solenoid.
The engine turns over and runs with an outside fuel supply. All the lights , radio, wipers, etc work. Ford used to have a voltage regulator for the gauge system but I have not gotten that far yet.
