Ok guys, got a ranger pretty much given to me & it has an electrical issue.
It is a 1993 with the 2.3 4x4 5 speed.
The problem is the small wire tied into the negative battery cable going to the frame has melted. All other grounds & ground straps look good. I fired it up for a minute so I could hear it run then shut it off. I then checked to see if the melted wire had gotten warm & it wasn't. Could it just be that one ground was bad? Or was it not running long enough?
Unfortunately I'm more of a tune up kinda guy,not an electrician lol. Any help would be great, truck is too nice to scrap!
It's the only ground that is / was working that's the reason it melted all the current was trying to get back to the battery through it clean and reseat the other grounds and you. Should be good to go
If the main (large gauge) battery to engine ground cable has been left disconnected while say working on the starter, or maybe its ground connection at the block was loose, corroded, or was other wise corrupted & was high resistance & then the engine was cranked for a start, all that current required to run the starter motor had to use that small gauge wire to find its way back to the battery & if so, it'll shurely get plenty Hot!!!! So, perform a voltage drop test on your battery ground cable & battery to engine & body ground connections as outlined here Voltage Drop Testing & let us know what you find.
