rough idle at start up

rough idle at start up
so i've only had this truck for a week an a half. only a few things wrong with it. first is when i start it up about 50% of the time it idles rough (as in the rpms jump from normal up 500 rpms) and the truck sounds like it's running on four cyclinders and the truck shakes. but if i raise the rpms to a steady grand for like 5 seconds and let off it's fine. no cel no hidden codes. this is my first diesel so im still learning.
Thanks in advance

Can you give us some details about the truck? How many miles? Mine will miss on one or two cylinders every once in a while when I first start it up, but it smooths right out after it starts to warm up. I just attributed it to having close to 400,000 miles on what I assume to be the original injectors. The injectors get a bit worn and don't do a good job of atomizing the fuel until they warm up a bit and the tolerances tighten up a little. At least that is what I have heard form our resident injector guru.
In your case, I would take a look at the valve cover harnesses. The valve cover gaskets on these trucks contain the electrical connectors that feed the injectors and the glow plugs. These are a known weak sport on our trucks and it is not uncommon for the plugs to get loose and burn up some of the contacts. You can unplug them (they are on the top side of the valve covers, two connectors on each side) and inspect them VERY carefully looking for burnt pins. You may have to pull the Valve Covers and inspect the wiring harnesses under there as well.
At any rate, welcome to the diesel side.
