like it says......lookin at either doing a gear swap 4:30 or 4:56 (285 tires and 3:73s). Or goin with a 03-04 rebuilt v10. I believe they would both be around the same price. Would really like to do both some day...what do yall think i should do first?I'm tryin to avoid the $50 somethin thou payment cause my 5.4 is hurting and gettin any 6.0 or 6.4 is just out of the question for me..
im running the same setup, mods are in my sig. i would do the V10 swap myself. Im looking for a good V10 out of a 2004 truck so i can junk my 5.4. And that v10 will move way better than putting gears on a 5.4. Yes my 4.30's helped actually ford should have had it from the factory this way. And a V10 gets about 12-13mpg around town, the same as a little 5.4
Swapping gears is no replacement for displacement. No matter what gears you drop in it will not change the fact that you have a 5.4 putting out X-horsepower. The gears might help it to get more load moving, and even up to speed, but you will be doing it at the expense of cruising rpm and fuel mileage. I don't know the practicality of swapping a V10 in place of a 5.4, but unless it is a practical plug and play swap, you are most likely better off money wise to sell what you have and buy what you want.
I've done a fair amount of engine swaps in my day and they almost always nickle and dime you to death on the little things. Think long and hard before going down that road.
im with you on that!! cause i don't want an older tuck then i already have and i dont want to pay 50k for a truck...IE i will have to make a deal with the devil and jump into a 08 ish cummins.
for one when i swapped in 4.30 gears i got better MPG out of my 5.4. Lets not start a war but everyone who has a 5.4 super duty and 3.73 gears knows this truck does nothing but upshift downshift, and the motor works so hard to do it. the 4.30 helped with every day driving, towing, getting up to speed, etc. but like tgreening said theres no replacement for displacement! Thats also why im looking for a V10 replacement motor. And all you need is the PCM fromthe V10 and the motor wireing harness and its all plug and go play!
I talked to my mechanic yesterday about my ac (another issue)...and he said the cheapest he found a good (under 75k miles) v10 from a wrecked in the rear X was $2500..he told me labor would be another k

try this for your a/c problem first. And thats not bad for under 75k V10, just make sure you go see the motor while its in the truck still and look over it very well. check the oil and see if its clean or not. And try to see it run first also, my cousin did that once with a motor and he believed the salavge yard got it home, we put it in and the motor was shot.
I believe my problem is in the dash with the trap door getting stuck letting warm air in cause my system holds 48 psi (i think it was) bad memory and the evap, compressor, something else (dryer) i think it was called, im not too mech inclined. Also it blows semi weak.

I have heard my share of horror stories from my buddy (the mech)
Personally if you do the swap i would rebuild the V10 regardless of the miles on it. Since your already spending the money its better to go through it and do it right. This way it will last 200k + like your 5.4. If you don't want to spend the extra cash i would at least replace the manifold bolts and spark plugs.
