I know this has been a often talked about subject however I never really hear from the 5.4 guys. I am looking to get a 05' xlt supercab with an 8 foot bed. I will be doing no towing whatsoever but I will use it for hauling construction equip. Is the 5.4 really that much of a dog? I am not looking for head snapping acceleration but I do want to feel some power. Is it really worth to get the V10. Also which engine seems to be more reliable. Thanx
This is just my .02 I currently have a 2000 SD CC with a 5.4. I have no problems with it and I am very happy with it in the power aspect. I turn 37" tires with the stock 3:73 gears as well. I never haul anything and I am sure with the 37's it would be a pig. I have heard many bad things about the V10. one thing I have heard that the V10 is rumored to be Jaguar engineered. Which makes sense to me due to the fact that they seem to have a higher upkeep cost. But that also comes with territory of having 2 more cylinders. More Oil More Gas More of everything. I personally dont think that all the extras entailed with having 2 extra cylinders are worth it. For difference in money on upkeep and etc you could make a 5.4 more powerful. If I could do it over again I would have gotten the powerstroke just for the dependability of a diesel.
Once again Just my $.02. So you V10 owners dont come beating on my door.
I will be the first V10 (former V10 owner) to through in an opinion.
DON'T LISTEN TO THAT GUY!
I can only speak for the 99-04 V10's, but they use no more gas then a V8. The maintenance is no more either (at least on mine it wasn't). I had no problems with mine in the 3 years (50K) I owned it and neither has either of the other 3 people I know with them. The V8 people I know are happy with their trucks aswell. But with that said why not spend the extra $600.00 to get some more power??? Also who cares if Jag designed the motor. Doesn't Ford own Jag?????????
I have the 5.4 in my wife' Expedition... Nice engine with lots of bite (for the Expedition) <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

But..... I have the 6.8 in my 99 F-250 with 120K miles on it. About 50K of that was while towing a 13K pound toy hauler.... or a 29' Warlock boat or sometimes even a motorcycle or 2.... This engine rocks! I flat out pull harder than my neighbor's PSD, and I have had absolutely ZERO problems with it.... Nothing! Nada! Anyone who tells you it's a pile o' crap ...is obviously high. <o></o>

If you want power, then go big.... If that's not your main need, it's not like you're settling for a BAD engine.....<o></o>
I have the 5.4 and for me its plenty of power. But if you can find one of each or you are ordering the truck, for the small $$ diffenece and supposedly minimal MPG difference why not just go with the V-10?
I have drove the 5.4 and the 6.8 back to back just yesterday, both were new (3-valve) trucks, the V-10 is a world of differnce compared to the V-8, I have a '00 5.4 and I am happy, but for the extra $600 I would jump on the V-10, it gets the same milage and has a ton more power, the 5.4 can't get out of it's own way, go with at least 4.10's no matter what!
