I have an 78' F250, 400, headers, edelbrock intake and carb (1406), cam, etc. Once a year when I am towing in the heat, I get vapor lock due to my headers I am sure but was reading about running a return fuel line to circulate the fuel. Is there anyone who could tell me how to do it or at least show me some photos explaining the connections? I am going to put an electric fuel pump in the rear and replace all my fuel lines this weekend so I thought now would be a good time. I also have a 40gal new fuel tank installed.
Or just heat shield your fuel line. Cool it, or thermotech both make slip on heat shields that will work fine I have one myself no vapor lock issues and my return is blocked for now until I get my Edelbrock pump.
co425, do you have your return blocked cause the fuel pump isnt putting out enough pressure to return, the reason im asking is ause I was told the I shuld be running about 6 psi fuel pressure but with my return line I am only getting about 3 psi and with the return blocked I get a little over 5. I was thinking maybe I needed another fuel pump with a little more psi so I can get my 6 psi with the return line.
I ordered the "high velocity heat jackets" for my headers and "heat sleeves" for my fuel lines yesterday from Thermo_tec yesterday. I am still wanting to put the electric pump in with the regulator and return line but I do not know how to hook up the return line. Can anyone give me a picture or at least tell me where to "T" off the line to return it?
No mines blocked because my fuel tank is an in cab from a 69 f250. So I do not have a return to hook to. I will be changing my pump
soon so it's only temporary.
If your fuel pressure is that low I think your pump is shot.
You have my curiosity up. I would like to see the article doing this return line on a low pressure pump. Common sense tells me that it shouldn't work as in wadar69's post, since it has to lower the pressure. I've never had a vapor lock in 45 years, but know it does occur. I love learning new things, but need to understand them. I can see where a low pressure, high volume pump may work, or reducing the line size for the return line. The Carter P4070 I just put on my current project will pump 75-80 gph. Have no idea what the others are rated for. Educate me.
I too had issues with vapor lock a number of times carrying my camper. So when I added the Edelbrock 650cfm carburetor, I also changed the fuel lines to Gates CFC Type AII 2 wire big rig hoses + 1200 degree insulation sleeves and metal insulation sleeve from the pump back to the tank valve under the truck cab (dual tanks.) The larger hose still pressurizes per the specs, but the size allows the additional volume of gas in the line to remain cooler. There are pictures in my gallery. Gotta love the overkill! No more vapor lock!!! You will have to put an adapter on the carb to reduce the connection from the Gates hose to the carb inlet. Sorry I don't remember the size though..
Good luck!
co425, i have a new airtex pmp but may be a bad one. will be getting another one. if I have my return line working what pressure pump should I try to use. I want to make sure I get enough pressure during driving but not to much during idle.
co425 if I go with the edelbrock then I shouldnt have to return back to the tank then so I can use that line as a vent then. But i could go with a higher pressure pump with a regulator and set my pressure where im getting 6 psi at idol and still use my return. Which way would you think would be the best way to run?
