Losing power

I have a 1992 bronco 5.8L, about once or twice a month while im driving it decides to just not want to go anymore. i will hit the gas and nothing will happen, it will try to rev up but wont. then a I will hear a loud clunk. while this is happening if i put it in neutral it will rev fine until i put it back into drive then does it again. if i stop and turn it off for about 5-10 min it will work fine until it happens agian. anyone know what would cause this?

first pull codes.

second, when was the transmission serviced last? is the tranny full of fluid? are you sure the transfercase isnt in neutral?

do you have a manual Tcase or Electric Tcase?

ive tried pulling the codes and nothing comes up.
Its an electronic transfercase so it shouldnt be neutral
The tranny has never been serviced in the 7 years ive owned it. I did top off the fluid about a year ago.

well you should always get a code so either its not being done correctly or you have a computer issue.

I would recommend you double check your tcase to make sure it not in neutral. put the case into 4low and see if the truck moves. if it does then go back into 2hi and try. if it continues to rev but not go anywhere i would service the tranny. Drain the torque convert as well to get the old fluid out.

I've experienced the same conditions and it was all caused by the lack of 2qts. of tranny fluid, you should be checking the level at least once a month. A tranny drain and fill-up with fresh Mercon V ATF could be a good idea since it hasn't been serviced ever (this could backfire, but i would try still).

it sounds like the torgue converter to me. a trans service could fix it,new filter and all.

My tranny was rebuilt 30k miles ago, and the torque converter too. My problem originated from a mediocre install of the tranny's pan gasket. I suspected the Torque Converter initially, but once i found how low was the ATF level and refilled i've had absolutely no issues with the truck regarding tranny/converter issues.

To check the ATF level: Let the engine warm up, roll the truck for some minutes under normal driving conditions, park it in a flat, even spot and measure the fluid.
