hello all,
new to the forum and broncos so please bear with me.. I have a 96 xlt with the 5.8 auto trans, and I was driving home from work and boom, my new found friend let me down. I heard a whining coming from underneath as the truck finished down shifting. I pulled over and tried to get it going. In 2h the car was barely moving while rpms were above 3.5. I put her in 4h and the same. Does not seem to want to go into low at all. Following a 2mile treck to the house with the truck barely moving and still at about 3.5 rpms I began to check for reasons for the slipping. I checked the u joints and shafts and I found that the driveshaft and u's were new. I am in need of some help, please feel free to ask questions or even give possible diagnosis.

It could be an adjustment but from what you say, it sounds like your tranny is very ill. Check your fluid and buy a Haynes manual and see what diags it gives you. You could try some Lucas Transmission fix in there but I don't know. If you do, drain 3 or 4 qts and then add the same amount of Lucas. You can get it from most auto parts stores.
start the rig and check the fluid level while its running. if you see bubbles on the dipstick or the fluid smells burn or rotten then you have trouble. that tranny is electronicly controlled so there is no adjustment. lets hope its not toast cuz thats the most expensive tranny to rebuild figure around $2k at least. the whinning makes me think that you are just low in fluid though
Ok, I started the beast and checked the fluid and there were a few bubbles on the dipstick. But wouldnt there be bubbles because of turbulence within the case? Also, the fluid smelled fine, just like tranny fluid. Could this be caused by a bad linkage? It just seems that the t-case is not engaging fully, or something. Thanks for the replies.
