I'm on vacation in middle of Montana pulling 7000# travel trailer. My ECT/EOT was 190/201 at 70mph at home in SW Washington. Now pulling trailer its going up to 211-220/225-230. My Edge insight alarms at 225 EOT, I think it hit 235 once, pulliing over a pass. I also noticed my fan doesn't kick on until ECT is 218 or so. Going downhill ECTwill cool back down to 190 and EOT 200. Air temp was about 80 degrees or so. I was wondering if should pull thermostat? Warranty expires in October. I thought it was supposed to throw a wrench light if over 15 degree spread but not sure what the conditions are.
Personally I don't think you have much of an issue. Yes, the temps seem a little high, but quite a few folks seem to see temps this high. By design, the thermostat isn't supposed to be fully open until 218*F or so. Also, it doesn't appear that you really exceeded the 15*F delta - maybe just hit it? The DTC is based on engine load I believe - just don't know the specifics. The TSB really only hints at the conditions. I guess you have had a calibration update in the last year or so?
I would love to hear from some Techs on your temps. I know of quite a few posts from folks that don't see temps over 200*F. I wonder why such a difference in the way some cooling systems operate vs others??
Thanks for the replies. Always nice to get a warm fuzzy from you guys. I think I am just hypersensitive now that I have gauges and the temps are a bit higher than I am used to. BTW I did change out my first coolant filter before the trip and no black sand, just a little bit of jelled looking stuff. On to Yellowstone to see Yogi!
I just came off a 3700 mile trip pulling my 10K lb toy hauler the same direction (I live in SW Washington also). My fan comes on hard at 220 ECT above 2500 rpm while pulling a hill. Cruising down the highway at 80-100 degree outside temps my ECT was about 210 unless pushing it, then would sit at 217. I have a new fan clutch and new thermostat.

Those are pretty much exactly what I see pulling the fiver. Enjoy your trip, because your truck is doing great!

I just pulled a 16,000lbs trailer from Alaska to Georgia. Your temps are fine. The clutch fan looks at alot more data than ECT and EOT. And the computer will make the fan work when it needs to and sometimes it will make no sense to YOU why it is doing what it does. Mine will come on and it may have something to do with A/C requirements.......sometimes I think it comes on when it sees a leggy blond walking down the street.
I did see EOT of 235 on some of the harder pulls. But when the fan comes down it cools right back down.
I am leaving to drive back to North Pole tomarrow,,,,,,anyone want to follow me up?

That is one of the reasons that Ford dummied up the factory gauges so that people didn't bring their vehicles in when they see a couple degrees diff. in temps. I don't necesarily agree with their strategy but it is what it is. When looking at your delta always do it on flat ground after everything is fully up to temp. If you look at deltas climbing, cresting or descending hills you will go nuts and the deltas don't mean squat unless you're overheating. Your worry then is the overheating not the delta. If towing and on a long steep grade and the temp. starts to get high, down shift it a gear. Let the gearing do the work, not the engine. That's why you have a 5 speed, tow/haul and a gear selector.

I'm going to disagree with everyone. You need to do some cooling system maintenance. That jelled looking stuff that you found in your filter will clog your oil cooler. I would STRONGLY recommend doing a complete flush with backflush of the oil cooler, radiator and heater core. The jelled stuff is likely silicate gel which will plug the oil cooler to the point that it will be required to be replaced. Your temps are good, but you have got to get this maintained quickly.
