390 shaking
Need some help with the '66.
I had a 390 built for it a year or so ago.
It has about 9.5 compression, a mild cam, holley 600 with electric choke, and a pertronics set up in the refurbished dizzy.
When firing it up last weekend,i timed it and set the carb best i could.
It ran pretty decent until it got up to about 190_200 degrees then it started popping occassioally under normal accelaration.
A buddy came over to help with the timing, and we found that we could adjust the timing from about 16 to 40 degrees with no real performance change at idle!
I moved the timing back to 16 degrees btc and played with the carb some more and now it shakes like crazy from idle(about 1200) to about 2500 rpm while i am driving.
I got a little backfire when driving steady at 45mph as well.
Any ideas what i need to look at from here?
Very frustrating to deal with after a 3yr. Frame off rebuild
Thanks...Larry
I pulled the valve covers and found 3 bent pushrods and 1 broken pushrod in the right head and 4 bent push rods in the left head.
All of the springs are still intact.
Are my rods too long or too short..or were?
What do i need to check now for damage?
Any help would be great as i am really at a loss as to the pushrod size i need as well as what caused the rods to go in the first place.
Thanks
to bend that many, that quickly, I think I'd want to see the pistons and check valve clearance.
I think I'd also want to measure pushrod length.
good luck,
dp
