this engine is a 390 in a 1964 galaxie 500XL. It all started in the middle of a burnout, It was running fine, and then it just started running terrible. I got it back home but it stalled at every stop sign if i didn't put it in neutral and play with the gas (its an automatic) Checked timing, it was were it always was, factory carb. is good and i ran it with a 600cfm holley off my truck and it ran the same, terrible. bought a new distributor ran the same. The fuel pump is good. Seems to me the fuel and ignition systems are good, Any thing else to check, or should i start taking it apart. Almost seems like valve train. Any thoughts are welcome, Thanks
Such an awesome line!! Dido on the compression check. Sounds like a bent pushrod and/or smacked valve. If you see any extra rods layin around under the hood then you're gonna wanna go ahead and pull the motor and put 'em back where they belong .
Anything beats a ventilated block.
Go simple/cheap first and pull your covers
and check pushrods for straightness, for
broken springs.
If all's good I would do a differential compression
check. When aired up you'll know your problem real quick.
What were ya turning when said problem occured?
I'd start with vacuum and compression, no cost for valuable information. If you have to buy the test equipment, at least it's re-useable. Now that I think about it, I probably have less than $50 in both sets. Had them for years, now I need a gauge for EFI pressures.
