Angry close to overheating

Hi, I have a 96 f150 4.9l that has had a cooling problem since last summer, problem being that the temp gauge runs just below 1/2 at idle, cools down somewhat during drives and climbs steadily when a/c is turned on, so far hasn't overheated...so I started at the logical place, the T'stat, no change, then I changed the sending unit, and cap, and hoses on the radiator...should I just bite the bullet and buy a new radiator and water pump or is there a way to test flow and function of either

Thanks

close to overheating

Just a thought.........when I replaced the radiator in my 94 Ranger last Oct, I found that bugs and debris had become trapped between the radiator and a/c condensor, costing me about 15 - 20% of the effective cooling area. I replaced the radiator due to leakage, not overheating, but experienced the engine running a bit warmer than normal on hot days with a/c on (compared to how the truck behaved when new and under similar conditions).
