i was just looking at the paint post and the striping down of bare metal cab.Has anyone had expierence with soda blasting for paint removal? vrs sandblasting thanks
Sandblasting is much more aggressive. With soda blasting you can remove paint literally one layer at a time. If you want to stop at the primer coat you can.
Soda blasting isn't good for rust removal, not aggressive enough.
I wanted to have my truck sodablasted and it was going 2b $300 an hour!!!! They said it would take 3 hours to do just the exterior???? So now im sanding it.... Also the dang powder apparently gets in all cracks and crevices so months later you will be driving down the road and you will see a little puff of it coming out of a crack.lol This happened to a friends 67 Mustang... ( he has a s**t load of $$$$) so he could afford it.
great info.I heard that as well coming back to bite you.I was told acetone, keep rubbing until that rag is clean.Does that sound right? Also local guy does it for 1/2 that cost.He said around 500 whole cab inside and out.How is that cost compared to sand blasting. He does sand, walnuts, and soda, glass bead.Any Thoughts?thanks dave
Im not familiar with that. But thats the great thing about this site, there are so many informed people who are,You can do your homework patiently, before you jump in there and tackle.Thankyou Please educate me and others dave

You get the same results as soda blasting without the puffs of white afterwards. You can actually strip a layer at a time, stopping at primer is you dont want to go all the way to bare metal. It wont do much to rust, but an air sander can take care of that.
So whats the process for that.Blast rust and then apply P acid.Do you have to clean area after with say acetone, for paint adhesion.thanks dave
Best to grind off the rust or replace the metal around that area but if your not up for that: After wire brushing the rusty area, brush the acid on. It need to dry about 24 hours. The acid turns the rust into black ferric phosphate, which can be painted over like regular metal.
Fun Fact: Coke can be used for rust removal in part because it contains phosphoric acid.
very cool.I have a little surface rust on cab hood.I grinded, then sand blasted. Was told that grinding does not get the rust out,its still embeded in the skin. But I guess the sand blasting and then into the phosphoric acid should take care of the issue. The metal is still way solid.Plus its in doors now
