Engine/exhaust braking

I was driving in a really hilly area today with really curvy roads, not switch backs just lots of hills and turns around other hills. I used tow/haul mode to help me out instead of riding the brakes the whole time. I came off a hill and before I hit the bottom I down shifted in to 2nd with pretty high RPM's (I didn't take note of my speed but somewhere around 40-50 I think). When I started going back up the other side I eased on to the accelerator and it went from 2nd directly to 4th and "kicked".

Those of you that use the engine/exhaust braking - is this "normal"? Does it vary when it does this? I wouldn't say this gear jumping was an "issue", as in it didn't scare me and I didn't think something broke when it did it, but I don't know that I would call it normal either. Not sure what to make of it?

On a side note, I normally use my tow/haul mode when slowing down and disengage it when I am accelerating. My thought is it takes the load of the brakes, and if it is designed to bring down the full rolling capacity of the truck I'm certainly not taxing it very hard with my "light" use.

While I cant say yet if that is normal, it is something I would expect when going from slowing down mode to exceleration mode.
I too started to use the tow/haul all the time till I got to thinking what all that down shifting might be doing to the tranny.

All that downshifting is doing exactly what it is expected to do to the transmission. Don't sweat it because you are never going to cause premature wear to the trans by using the tow/haul mode.

This 6R140 behaves much like the 5R110 did with this upshift condition. It is not consistent and it is slightly annoying when it does it, but it doesn't seem to hurt anything.

Yep - same thing here (sometimes). What I end up doing is disengage the tow-haul temporarily to let it shift up before applying load. It is much smoother that way.

Is that an Earth Roamer in your avatar by any chance?

Usually I hit the tow/haul if I know I am coming down a hill in to a turn heavy (rolling through state routes) or if I am coming up to a stop (daily driving). Other than that I leave it out of tow/haul. I will try a couple different options next time I am on hilly roads and see if they have any affect.
