Does anyone have ac belt vibration issues on 460 engine. My truck is a 78 F150 with factory air and the belt vibrates when compressor is engaged. everything in the system is new except the condenser. I had a 79 Bronco in the early 90s with ac and a 351 but I dont remember if the belt vibrated and made noise back then.
There is a rumbling noise and the belt vibrates a bit I have heard that on a 460 it is such a long belt run that it is normal. Truck did not have ac when I got it took the System out of a Junker and installed on mine which was a huge job. I copied the Ford system as close as possible if my vibration and noise is common to york compressors thats good to know!
I'm not sure if its the compressor or the belt's vibrating that causes the rumbling but there was a thread here concerning just that a few weeks ago and the general consensus was that it is very common and nothing to worry about. Both my '79s made the noise with the ac on.
Yorks are notorious for vibration (that's why I'm converting to a Sanden style on my project) add to that a long, unsupported belt run and that just magnifies the vibration and noise problem.
In your installation you should have two idler pulleys, one adjustable (basic p/n 8678) and one fixed (also basic p/n 8678). Be sure you have both of these.

Installing factory ac in a truck that had none was a huge job so just imagine my dismay when you fire it up for the first time and it makes that noise. Thanks for your input guys.I do have the second fixed idler pulley to the left of the compressor I figured that one out when I saw a picture OF a 460 with air.
Those idler pulleys are notorious for having bad bearings that cause the vibration you describe. I had a '78 F150 SuperCab with a factory 460/c6 setup.
I know the old York compressors are kind of noisey but try replacing the idlers first-just be sure to get ones with steel bearings, I got some with plastic bearings some years back and they lasted about 4 months.......

You'll know quick when the bearings fail. I had my upper die on my idler, Siezed and made all kinds of rukus under the hood. And burning belt rubber.
Mikeo peaked my interest in this sanden compressor . I imagine it is a rotory type. does anyone make a kit to bolt on a 460 without having to change all the pulleys evaporator ect?

Nostalgic Air makes the bracket that bolts to the original York mount then the Sanden bolts to that.
I haven't gotten that far but I believe the hoses will need to be changed. www.nostalgicairparts.com
