Went out to start my 99 PSD..(68k miles) and nothing.....(1) i checked the glowplug realy and (I thought ) it checked bad...what should anew relay cost???. (2)Should the starter engage..even IF the glowplug relay is No good????The starter isn't turning over at all......so if anybody would like to hazard an educated guess what isn't working correctly????I don't need a big repair bill right now....does the factory 5year\100k milage warranty cover the starter and\or the engine computer.....I've got alot more questions than I do money right now...all help is appreciated....fd............Also...I've got the gloplug relay sitting on my desk but I don't remember which wires go where...Damn...I thimk the power wire goes on the large ..left terminal ..and the glowplug supply wire(s) on the big right terminal. bot i don't remember wich little wire goes to which little terminal......fd

thanks les , batteries fully charged. and i found the solenoid. I checked the golplug relay and it checked bad but PSD tech says it won't activitate if temp is above 86 of. so maybe that is why it didn't cycle thru. If you can check those little red wires on your gloplug relay....one has a WHITE stripe and I need to know which terminal it goes on...the front or back......My gloplug relay has no markings on it at all............I'll wait a few minutes and see if your still around the pooter....thanks for the help. fd
Fatdaddy, your glow plug relay will no be energized by the computer if Engine oil temp is above 86 deg.F California Emission equiped vehicles are different. The blk/org thick wire goes to the large post on the passenger side, yellow/brn on the big post towards the middle of the engine. I think the other wires are red and then purple/orange. The polarity of those should not make a difference as to which small post they connect to (one is power and the other is ground) to energize the relay. A no crank concern will not be caused by a faulty G/P relay. Test for good battery voltage @ the starter big post, and then have a buddy try to crank it over, there should be Bat pos at the small terminal. Providing that you have good cables(voltage drop test) your starter solenoid or starter is @ fault.
PSD , first thanks for the advise. Battery voltage is good , GP relay is functioning correctly , and i replaced the starter solenoid .. tried to start and Nothing. I haven't been able to check the voltage at the starter its self. how hard is it too pull the starter and check it ....and how do i check it????? Or should i just have it hauled to the dealer???? I'm kinda unsure at this point if i should try to fix it myself or let the dealer fix it and see if it might be covered by the warranty. What do you think. Thanks for your help....fd
Fatdaddy, I'll let that decision up to you. You can always tow to dealer and say if its not covered to let you know before repair. They will charge you some sort of diag fee if the items are not covered. Most everything with the engine is covered for 5/100,000 though.
I don't know what type of tranny you have but I have had a couple of vehicles that the neutral safety switch went south causing a no crank situation, being the hack that i am i jumped the wires at the switch instead of replacing it.
Samm , dumb question...where is the switch located????I have a 6 speed in my psd....is the switch located on the clutch pedal arm .....sorry to be so dumb, but i'm learning fast it seems. Thanks for taking the time too reply....fd
Fatdaddy, Clutch safety switch is on the pedal assembley and the trans range(neutral safety) is on the drivers side of the trans @ the shift lever. Not many problems, but certainly a possibility. If either (depending on trans) is at fault you will not have Bat voltage at the small terminal of the soleniod when in the crank position.
