Does anyone have suggestions for a good basic CB? I will probably not use it a lot right now so I am looking to go as inexpensive I can, but I still want a good radio, I've looked at a midland 1001z, has anyone used these? any good?

IMHO you can't beat a Uniden 510 with fire sticks for a lower buck setup. When you want to reach out a little more take it to a CB shop and have it peaked and tuned (well worth it) Legally a CB can't transmit over 4watts Peaked and tuned the three 510's in my family push 20w+ and my pc78 is over 30w. Want to upgrade a little more add a noise canceling mic. (Love my Astatic 636?) or a power mic. You can't go wrong with Uniden or Cobra,. I have also been told Uniden and Cobra use the same guts. I have never heard a good word about Midland brand CB

I have a cheap Midland, you can't hear anything on it. I have an old Cobra 19 that works awesome, it actually came in my 88 F350 Centurion when the truck was new and it still works. I have a cobra 75 in my new F150, thats the way to go if you don't want to drill holes and mount a bunch of crap, the box and everything mounts under the dash where you don't see it
