Anyone install aftermarket lights on top of their cab? I'd like to install them since my truck doesn't have them.
I want the LED ones, but I want them to look like the OEM lights from the factory. Most of the LED ones I have found have either the smoke or clear lenses, which I think have a little too much of the "ricer" look. I did find these on eBay:
You can get OEM style and then purchase LED bulbs.
There is no wiring up there so your kit will need to have the wires or you will have to make your own harness.
Thanks for that link there gchavez. I hadn't even thought about going that route. I will have to swing by the junkyard and see if they have any SDs out there with cab lights I can grab.
i bought mine off ebay for around 125 bux shipped. there oem ford ones with the factory harness, all i had to do was drill and install them. mine are the standard light bulb but there all basically the same set up. i think they turned out awesome.
I will be installing them a bit later when it cools down. I got the clear lenses and it comes with a flasher unit by whelen. I have had several times in the past year that it would helped out a bunch to having some form of flashing lights. Tornado recovery, wrecks, etc... I plan on wiring the flasher controls into the garage door portion of my overhead console.

Those do look awesome, but there's no way I'm paying $250 for them, plus another $40 for the wire harness.
I installed cab clearance lights on my truck. There is a guy in Clearwater who buys wrecked Super Dutys from insurance companies, and I bought a used set with the wiring harness that was in great shape for 45 bucks. Be carefull of some of the aftermarket lights like Recon. The top of your truck is curved, and some of the aftermarket lights don't have the same curve to match the truck. I would go with OEM. I had to splice in the wiring harness for the lights. I thought I posted pics in a thread here somewhere on the location for the splice. If you don't have anything plugged into that harness, you might not have to splice, it may just plug in. If you do install the lights, make sure you measure, measure, and measure. After you measure, and you think you have it all right, measure again. Once you start drilling, that's it, there is no turning back. So you want to be sure of yourself. Good luck.

Yeah, I did actually install cab lights on my 95 F-150 about 5 years ago and they turned out great, so I know all about the measuring. On that truck, I just got them at Walmart. (Peterson Mfg I believe is the brand) I haven't had any problems with them and they do look nice so I would probably just use them again on my new truck if I didn't want LEDs.
I installed cab lights on my 2011 about a month ago. I used factory lights and harness from partsguyed.com. Everything ran me about $125.00 shipping and all. The hard part was the drilling. The first hole is the hardest. Like stated in a previous post; measure, measure and measure!

i may want to take the plunge and do the same in my 2011. what kind of issues came up with the headliner removal? im mostly concerned with the airbags. also, where is the wire harness plug in from the factory, i read somewhere its in the passenger side door frame?? im scared as heck to drill into it but once i start ill be set. also, what type of drill bits did you use? ok... one more question.... does the factory kit come with a measurement template?

Ok, here it goes...the headliner didn't need to be completely removed. Just drop the front down. I removed the visors, over head console and the a-pillar trim pieces. It dropped it by about a foot or so. Plenty of room to work. I rested it on the front seat headrests so it wouldn't kink. The wire harness has two connectors, one for the airbags and one for the sirius antenna. The connector for the airbags is also the same one for the lights. The light/airbag connector is at the base of the a-pillar behind the dash and the satellite antenna connector is a little lower down, just above the park

The lights do not come with a template. I got a template somewhere on this site, just dont remember which thread. Do a search and you will come up with it. I used a high speed drill bit for the mounting holes, they are 1/4 inch, and a 7/8 inch stepped drill bit for the connector holes. Very clean. Dont forget to seal the raw metal after you drill with some touch up paint. There are a few pics in a thread I had in the 6.7 diesel forum on FTE. Good luck.
