06 6.0 help

I have an 06 f250 with 6.0 and about 168000 miles. This morning i arrived at work and smelled a little antifreeze. I open the hood to find antifreezeall around the resevoir and on the fender. Obviously it came out the tank somewhere. I just replaced the tank a few months ago. I found it about a gallon low. What could have happened. I did not notice the temp higher than normal. Could it be a blown egr cooler putting pressure into the cooling system. It has not started to smoke from the exhaust. Engine seems to run strong an smooth and not hard to start. Is this a common problem from maybe having low coolant or something like that. Honestly I have not checked it since the new tank was put on. Any help would be appreciated since I have to pull a heavy gooseneck 250 miles this weekend.

Thanks
Sean

I would put the towing job on hold.

You either have a leaking EGR cooler, or leaking head gasket. That pretty much sums up the likely problems.

I'm curious why you changed the degas bottle. Has this been going on for a while?

The tank began to rot. It turned whit and could not see through it anymore and one day I noticed a pin hole leak on it. Ford dealer told me it was common for em to crack and leak. Since he has about 20 in stock I went ahead and replaced it. As far as noy going this weekend, that is not an option.

Well, you risk damaging your engine if either of my guesses are correct. But heck, it's your truck.

Your risk is actually less if it is the HG. But I don't think it is.

Why do you think its more likely the cooler than the head gaskets. I hope its only the cooler. I am trying to get my hands on a test kit to check for exhaust in the coolant. I am dragging a 32 trailer empty home this afternoon so we will see if there is definately a problem or not.

If you want to check if it is the cooler, park it nose down for a while and pull the egr valve. Look for wetness (coolant)! If it is dry then most likely head gasket.

It could cost big money if run that truck. Towing only makes it worse

If the EGR cooler is leaking you could hydro lock your engine. When this happens coolant leaks into you cylinders. When you start the truck coolant is sitting in the cylinders, and when started all hell breaks loose. You will damage your block your crank your pistons and other parts. You will be looking at about a 10k bill for the repair. DON'T DO IT.

Allot head gaskets blow because the EGR system add coolant to compress stroke of the engine. This creates to much pressure and blow the head gaskets.

If you got to tow somthing , rent a truck until your truck is running right..

Because you have 168,000 miles, and you haven't yet mentioned your oil cooler. You're past due. Your oil cooler clogging is the reason your EGR cooler may have failed. I'm only guessing, can't quite see your truck from here.

BTW, combustion gasses in the coolant is not a foolproof test on the 6.0. Either EGR or HG can cause that.

the first thing you will need is a new cap.
Then go from there.

Hopefully they would have put a new cap on the new bottle, but you never know.

Appreciate that info. I will do that. I did not tow a trailer home. And still barely made it with water in it. It blew the bottom hose off as I pulled into the driveway. I made the decision to a complete egr delete and head bolt and gaskets. The kit I have found also has the oil cooler in it. I talked to some people who have done this and they tell me it can be done without pulling the cab. So my truck will be sitiing for a while. Thanks for all your help guys.
