hi ,im changing the rearend in my 94 f150 4x4,the old tag on the original diff says, S838F, 3 55 88 3L17,the tag on the new diff says, 28O7D, 355 88 9D19.my question is,does the letter D mean i have positrac? thnx for any help.
That just means it came from the factory as an open diff. Best way to be sure is pop the cover off and look, or spin the wheel and see what the other does.
ok thnx guys, now the reason im changing rearends is because diff had no oil in it and caused damage.now would it be easier to change just the differential instead of the whole rear end and would the differential guts with tag number 355889D19 take place of the guts from the original rearend with tag number 355883L17,lol guess what im trying to say is that im thinking is taking the back plate off both and exchanging the guts (diff)instead of the whole rearend, anyone know if this will work?will the D19 fit into the L17 housing, thnx again.
The ring and pinion gears are machined together, don't mix and match them. If you want to swap the guts you need to change the pinion as well. If you have the whole axle, it would be easier to swap the whole thing than setting up gears.
well put the new rearend on stands and had to knock pry etc the drums off as they were stuck. anyway when i turn one side, the other side spins the same way and when i spin backwards the other side spins backwards too.does this mean its posi?
also i noticed i can move the axels in and out about a 16th of an inch on both sides is this normal play?when i try twisting sideways or up and down, its solid.thnx
