I've been looking throughout this site and haven't found too many good repsonses to the question of what upgrades there are to be gotten for the 5.8l HO V8 my 86 Bronco's got. I don't have a huge budget but am willing to put money in over time..
I don't think he's talking about just straight pipes. When he says free-flowing exhaust, I'd take that to mean headers, a high-flow catalytic converter (or cat-delete), or a high flow muffler.
I personally have ran straight pipe on my truck, and while it's loud as hell and it sounds good, it can get you in trouble with the law (ask me how I know), and I've been told many times that if you run straight pipes that are too big, you can actually lose low end torque. From what I've always been told, the goal of a good exhaust system is to have a system that flows as freely as possible, while still keeping up exhaust velocity.
Something else to look into would be an intake manifold. Those start at around $150, and are definitely worth getting. A new carburetor, camshaft/ valve train upgrades, ignition system, and minor machine work also come to mind. For the 351, the possibilities are almost endless.
