My 04 was pretty quiet when I had the pilot injection program installed, but that's REALLY hard on the injectors so I took it out. Days gone by and LOTS of water under the bridge.
The reason for my somewhat smarta** remark is that people like the OP are the reason the new 6.7 sounds like a damn minivan. Sorry but in my opinion a truck should sound like one. Also, I would by no stretch of the imagination consider my 6.0 "loud." At least not from the inside. Once I get up to a cruising speed I can't even hear it anymore.
Is your truck stock? Does it still have the muffler and CAT? Stock tires? Do you have the blanket under the hood? (depends on model year)
Running a Cetane booster like Diesel Kleen will quiet the injector clatter a bit. And likewise the synthetic 5W, but only while the engine is cold. The oil won't matter once it is warmed up.
The 1st week after I bought my 05 I thought, What did I do?? Now when I'm in a gasser I miss the sound. It does grow on you. At least it did me. I like the 6.7 but it's too quiet. Guess that's another learning curve.
I can tell you from a side by side comparison that a 6.0 with 5w-40 Rotella is at least 40% quieter than a 6.0 with 15w-40 conventional after both trucks cold soak at -20F for 12 hours and are then started.
Hell, never mind the actual engine noise, just the fact that my truck with 5w-40 in it wasn't bucking, shaking and gyrating made it at least 40% quieter!
I agree, my engine with the T-6 5W-40 is definitely quieter than with 15W-40, I don't hear those injectors HAMMER like they used to. Our engines are noisy due to the HEUI Injectors, not combustion.
Just find an older Dodge (Cummins) to pull up next to.
HAHA I was just thinking that.
I thought T6 worked a little bit, but I went to T6 from Mobil1, So it's Not much difference there. But did notice a big difference from 15/40 to 5/40 at start up.
Just don't pull up next to a newer Chevy or Dodge diesel truck.
The new Chevy's still sound nice. They are louder than the 6.4 powerstrokes even. The new Dodge's I can't say because no one around here drives them but the one or two I've seen I could at least hear a little engine noise. It seems like Ford is the only one who took the 'quiet diesel' a little too far.
I like the sound my 6.0 makes! It's music to my ears. It's no where near as loud as the 7.3, cummins, or ealier diesels. But not as quiet as the 6.4, 6.7, or duramax.
As another poster stated, when I ride in a gasser it's too quiet and boring. It grows on you.
You know, it really makes us all look good when a new guy asks an honest question and gets a bunch of smart *** answers.
Yeah, the 6.0L isn't probably going to be quiet. But the least we can do is try to help him the best we can. Even if it is explaining that the 6.0L isn't probably going to be very quiet.
With the stock exhaust system how can you really make it any quieter?
Compared to my cummins sometimes I think my motor shut off on me!
Going from 15w-40 to 5w-40 will help the noise when the engine is cold, lets say under 120*.
When the engine is cold, the turbo will increase overall boost pressures, making the engine work harder to warm up faster. Canceling out that turbo warm up programing will decrease some of the exhasut sound when the engine is lower than normal operating temps. Also, since the cold engine is working slightly harder from the turbo, the engine will be slightly louder compaired to if the turbo is not boosting.
Many including my self, experience less injector noise when 15oz-38oz of 2-stroke oil is added in the fuel.
I have a hood insulator and that decrease engine noise to the cab and out side of the truck.

I have to agree with you. If you cannot give an actual answer that will help then don't reply. First stuff foam rubber under the dash, tape egg cartons to the windows, but be sure you leave a hole to see through, then buy some of those foamy ear plugs, uh, oh hell just turn up the radio.http://images.ford-trucks.com/forums...ies2/wink2.gif
Yep must agree that my old 94 7.3 idi was super loud when first started in cold mornings , and I mean LOUD , my neighbors loved me at 3:45 in am starting it they all called it the coffee grinder but I will say that my 6.0 is so much quieter but not like a gas motor it's just nice to hear that rat a tat tat warm up and purrrr even at 33 below then get into my nice warm truck and a nice loud winter time turbo whistle music to my ears
