When do you change your fuel filter?

Its been at least 20K miles since last replacement. Can it cause your truck to stall out and die. Pushing throttle only blows white smoke, rough idle, but eventually smooths out.??

15K is normal to change the filter, more often if running Biofuels..
It would help maybe to get your fault codes read..

I also change mine every 15K and have never had one look dirty. But I also almost always fill at the same station that has a very quick turnover of diesel.
OT:Frank are ya getting ready for that new BTS tranny!! YEEEEEEHAAAAAA

Hey folks, I'm running a gasser and just about ready to switch into my first diesel. I need to pull a newly purchase toy that weighs in at 9000# and the Ram 1500 just doesn't make it. Being new to diesel, I'm really curious about the need for the fuel filter changing duration. I have over 200,000 on my gasser fuel filter and have never had a problem. Is diesel fuel dirty or what causes the need to change the filters so often? Does additive help with this? How can you tell if a filter is plugging up or when it's changed what will you see on the filter indicating plugging? I understand the extreme conditions the fuel is under (compression, high pressure injectors, etc....) but can't they deliver fuel that is clean or is it the system that causes the contamination? I have always and will continue to purchase high turnover fuel. It's a must especially with the gasoline ethanol that we have to deal with. Thanks for the help in understanding.

IIRC a diesel fuel filter is much tighter than a gas fuel filter. For example some gas fuel filters are rated anywhere from 10-100 microns while a diesel fuel filter will be in the 2-10 micron range. I believe this is a result of the higher injection pressure and possibly finer atomization associated with the diesel cycle, especially in Direct Injection and very much so in high pressure common rail applications.

OP: I change mine every 10-15k using Motorcraft (10 microns) or Donaldson (5 micron @ 95%) filters.

15k or yearly for me. Which every comes first.

You got lucky, or the filter got a hole in the media and allowed unfiltered fuel through. Most gasser fuel filters call for 30k changes.

Is diesel fuel dirty or what causes the need to change the filters so often?
Diesel filters are usually finer and are also a water separator. Diesel fuel from many stations sits in tanks for a long and can grow algae. One bad tank of fuel can have you shoulder fast. Diesels don't tolerant neglect as well as gassers. Filter and oil changes must be kept up or you will have problems.

Water Seperation. Also, diesel fuel used to be much dirtier. They've cleaned it up alot with the ULSD. They are also charging us more for that cleaner fuel.

It is critical and I think justifies a good quality pre-pump filter which has a water stripper in it and a drain. I change both once a year, whenever we have our first frost. Overkill? Probably...but I don't worry about the injectors seeing water. I pull 1/2 pint off of the pre-pump filter monthly and never mess with the underhood drain UNLESS I see water in the fuel pulled from the pre-pump filter after that fuel sits overnight. I have never had any water reach the underhood filter.

Made 70,000 miles on my filter before the engine started acting while pulling uphill. 10 -15 minutes on the side of the road to put new filter in and I was on my way.

used to do every 10k, but these days, the BF1212 and engine one get changed when the fuel pressure gauge starts to fluctuate/dip.
