So I replaced my fuel filter today and it looked fairly dirty... the rubber part was a light brown color and the actual filter inside was black from what i could tell. I guess it was actually really dirty, but what I wanted to know is how often you are supposed to change this filter? I know for a fact that is hasn't been changed in at least a year because that was when i got the truck.
Alot of people on here change them out every 5,000. I personally change mine out at 10,000 with my oil change. The diesel fuel around here is alot cleaner, i know this because when i change mine, my filter isn't that bad.
I have always heard between 10,000-15,000 is the average on changing out the fuel filter but certain situations like running biodiesel will have you changing it more often atleast the for the first time you run it.
I change mine every 15,000, but that's only every 3 or 4 months for me. A lot will depend on how many miles you drive a year, if you buy good fuel, and how dirty your tank and lines are.
A visual inspection is free, so I'd just keep an eye on it and see what your truck needs.
Thanks a lot guys...the truck was stalling out and sounding like it was going to die at stop signs and red lights and I have gone through 2 cam shaft position sensors already so I knew that it must have been something else. I got to thinking about it and realized that I hadn't replaced the fuel filter since I bought the truck, sure enough she is running great almost like the day I bought her!!! Guess everyone is right when they say to check the vitals of the truck when you have a problem.
