needing help

So quick back story... I have an 83 full size, with a 351w. It was running hot one day after I was out mudding. took it home and parked it till the weekend when I could fix it. well after a few days I went out and it wouldnt start replaced every part of anything ignition or charging system still nothing. then left for basic and ait got back started working on it again and just the other day I found what looks to be an ecu under the driver seat any ideas to what it does and if that could be the problem. thanks ahead of time for any help

Hmm ECU under drivers seat? Was it just sitting there, or was it plugged into something? I didnt think they put them there.

Pics would help. I'm pretty sure that Ford never mounted the ECM under the drivers seat. It could be for an aftermarket alarm.

No, they didn't. Its possible that the PO did a hatchet job with a EFI engine.

that was my thought, and its not efi its still carbed. But i called a fellow ford enthusiast who workks at autozone and he looked up the part and sure enough they sell them. then i did some research and they sell them online for my truck and all they say is that it controls the engine... idk the wires run through the floor under the seat. idk if its worth the 130 bucks to replace it or look elsewhere for the problem.

Wow that is interesting. Def not stock. What trans do you have? I really don't see that ecm as doing anything on a carbed motor. Id trace the wires and see where they go tho.

Could be MCU or EEC-III. Most likely EEC-III due to the external PROM attached in your pic.

Look at the door frame sticker and any underhood stickers to determine what the truck was built to: 49-State Emissions or California Emissions or Canada.

What shape Ignition Coil does it have: E-core or the 60's-70's look cylindrical?

What does the distributor look like on the outside? A wire cable into the side of it? Does it have a Vacuum Advance unit on it? Anything else on it?

What's inside the distributor: Nothing but a Rotor?
or a Rotor with underneath it a 8-toothed Reluctor with magnetic pickup coil mounted next to it?

What about the carb? Is it a 2150 2 barrel with the only wires to the carb itself maybe electric choke?
or is it the 7200 v v carb with the stepper motor on the side of it? The stepper motor has 6 wires, IIRC. The 7200 v v carb does not have a choke plate. The top of the carb has two sliders that open up and withdraw the needles from the jets, that's the variable-venturi part of it.

Back in those years there were a lot of different configurations. Without ID'ing exactly what you have, it's all guesswork.

Its 42 state

What shape Ignition Coil does it have: E-core or the 60's-70's look cylindrical?
Cylindrical

What does the distributor look like on the outside? A wire cable into the side of it? Does it have a Vacuum Advance unit on it? Anything else on it?
Normal nothing on it no wire or vaccum

What's inside the distributor: Nothing but a Rotor?
or a Rotor with underneath it a 8-toothed Reluctor with magnetic pickup coil mounted next to it?
Just the rotor

What about the carb? Is it a 2150 2 barrel with the only wires to the carb itself maybe electric choke?

All I know is it say variable venturi
