towing question?
i just picked up a 6x10 enclosed trailor. should i lock out the od button always when towing? i did on the way home just to be sure, but it dropped mileage to 10 mpg. it will shift into od on hyw while towing trailor, but i dont want to tear up tranny. i have heard both opinions . always lock it out and dont worry about it the tranny will downshift whenever it needs too. any experience is appreciated. new to forum.....i was told the 7700 series has the 3/4 ton tranny and rearend.
If the truck pulls the load on the level and minor grades at speed ,leave it in OD.
It will down shift when needed.
You might hear the word hunting but what does it actually mean?
The trans will not 'hunt'.
Normal down and up shifting is controlled by throttle angle and road speed and has some timing to it so hunting cannot occurr..
The computer tells the transmission when to shift up or down as derived from the driving condition at that moment.
I pull a 6x10 flat with a 4.6. While it has no area pushing air I get sometimes forgetting it's back there until I look in the side mirror and see my flag sticks on the rear corners because I cannot see the trailer otherwise and hardly feel the trailer weight..
I sure have no downshifting much more than normal with that light a load even with a load on it pulling through the Pocono mtns. of Pa..
And just to add on the other extreme, I had been pulling a 24 foot race trailer with a gross combined weights of over 12,000 lbs. with a 4.6 and 4r70w trans.
Good luck.
