more towing questions

I just read the recent post on towing, and had another question. I am going to be towing a small trailer down to Gulf Shores Alabama in a week and a half. It will only have 2 motorcycles on it. Should be less than 2000 lbs. If I keep the speed up above 70 or so, and don't let the tranny shift too much can I keep it in o/d? Or is this a definate no-no. I always keep it out of o/d when towing my boat, but with a pretty light load, highay speeds, and flat ground will it still hurt me? I know not to use o/d in the mountains etc.

Thanks.

Travis

I'd leave it in O/D, if it were mine. With that amount of weight, you shouldn't have any problems. If you see it is shifting up and down a lot, just take it out of O/D. I used O/D with my F250 pulling a 33' 5th wheel (12000#) and followed the same philosophy. Good luck!!

You should be all right in OD for two reasons, light weight, and even more important than weight, small frontal area. Just shift out of OD in hills or low rpms due to traffic. Power needs increase at a rate equal to the square of increase in speed due to wind resistance and friction.
