Rubber or No Rubber?

Hello Friends,

It's me again...

As you may recall, my truck is getting painted this week and I believe I am in the need a few items to be ready in order for the project to move along swiftly...

So my question is, all of the rubber (Cowl Seals, Cab Running Board Seals, Radiator Shroud Hood Seal, Battery Splash Rubber Seal - or as Mid Fifty would put it the "I need It All & I Mean All" Rubber Kit ~ $499.95) are there any that one can do without?

Are they all of the utmost importance? Have you replace them all?

If not, which did you leave out and are happy with not replacing - ever?

What purpose do they serve anyway?

Now you know the extent of my ignorance!

Paul

I wouldn't. I realize some of them are cosmetic (cab to running board, fender welt, etc.) but why cut corners?

If you buy everything you really need, and leave out the purely cosmetic stuff, it will probably cost just as much as the whole kit anyway.

NOT a dumb question... I am at the same stage as you are.... just about ready to start re-assembly. I just don't have the $$$ to spend on the whole shebang.

I am interested in the responses to this question as well.
I already have SOME of the pieces, but haven't run the individual numbers yet...

You went to the trouble to do a frame off restoration/rebuild. Maybe stretch the timeline out a bit but don't go cheap now. Of course if an original piece is still good reuse it but don't leave it out. My 2 cents.

$500-that seems pricey to me. If you do go that route make them give you the hollow door seals instead of the solid ones. I'm assuming the kit is for a restored truck and not a modified one. If your heavily modifying, there are probably quite a few that you will not need (cowl vent, heater core come to mind).

Go through the catalog and price it out. See how much of a discount you get by buying the big kit vs. each piece individually. More than likely, you'll need more of the kit than not. You might even save a buck overall, and if you have pieces left over you didn't want to use, you didn't lose anything. Besides, that's what the classifieds are for. ;-)

When I first started my build I would always add a rubber gasket or two to the order. At this time I've got at least 90% stocked to be used when I reached that point. When the build go as slow as my it gives a lot of time to accumulate a lot of parts before they are needed.

I did a frame up restoration. There were some things I didnt install. I cant remember for sure which ones they were, like radiator seal and such. I think I had 4-5 things left over. Its been a long process and cant remember what specifically I left out.

Im no expert but after being a mechanic for 30 years in kind of a cold
climate I find they put all that pricey stuff in for a pretty good reason.
