Trouble starting
About a week ago, I noticed a delay between key to start and starter engaging. Huh, wierd.
Two days ago, my wife loads the kids up to head to a wedding and *click*, starter not engaging and only getting a solenoid clicking noise.
Another shop told me recently that my batteries are going to need replacing soon, so I thought well, must be the batteries. I figured I'd give it jump. If it starts, I know the batteries don't have enough amps in them to fire off the starter.
So yesterday, I set a jump vehicle up next to the Ex. Try engaging the starter (just in case the Gremlins moved on to warmer climate) and *click*. I read something about a 2nd relay somewhere on the passenger fender so thought I'd check it. Opened up the hood to look. The key is still on, mind you, and as I open the hood the fuel pump is completing its cycle and shuts off. With the fuel pump off I can hear a rattling noise, which I find coming from what appears to be a vacuum pump on the passenger fender (later confirmed). I'm checking the hose connections and don't see anything loose, but can hear a hissing noise as well. So I ask my wife to turn the key so I can try to find the clicking relay. She turns the key from on to start and BAM, car fires up! HUH????
Wife heads out this morning, starts the car right up and heads to the store 40 minutes away. Calls me later to tell me she's stranded at the store because the car now won't start again. I ask if she tried leaving the key in the on position for a minute until the fuel pump completes its cycle and shuts off, then tried it. Yep, she says she did just to try to duplicate what worked the day before. Well, not quite. I tell her to pop the hood and wiggle the vacuum pump a little. Ok, she says, I did that. Ok, try starting it now. BAM, fires right up.
WHAT THE HECK?

Sorry for such a long explanation but this has me stumped. Any ideas out there?
