3g alt- rebuild or replace?
I picked up a 3g at the pick-n-pull today. It failed the test at the parts store, so I took it home and pulled the voltage regulator/brushes.
The brushes are worn down to the nubs, which probably explains the failed test.
I know I can buy brushes for $10, but whats worrying me is- the brushes have worn some *serious* grooves into the shaft.
is this a deal-breaker? the yard has a 30-day money-back guarantee, so i can return it and start over if necessary.

The brushes will not seat very well on grooved slip rings. You could take it back and roll the dice again at the yard, or talk to a local rebuilder if you have one, and see how much it would cost to fix the one you have up.
