Anyone tried to buy ATF lately? Seems that everywhere I try has only 6 to 12 quarts in stock, NONE of it MercV. And the only full synthetic I can seem to find is Royal Purple which is good *****, but still FAR too expensive at $13 a quart. Even online I can't seem to find anyone that's selling MercV ATF in any sizeable quantities.
The only gallon or 5 gallons I can find seem to be "store" brands, Coastal at Auto Zone or O'Riellys brand.
Go to O'Reilly. They will have to order it, but they sell Motorcraft Mercon V cheaper than the Ford dealer. That is what I did when I changed my fluid.
I have seen the same issue at times and attribute that to 'Just-in-time' retail stocking practices. They don't want too much stock sitting on the shelves, but it's a b!tch when you need 12+ quarts!
Every auto parts store I've walked into had Mercon V by the buttloads of various brands.
Personally, I would only use Castrol, it's never let me down, especially in the 4R70W's I've put it into that had the typical torque-converter lockup chatter. Went away with the Castrol stuff, never came back.
Now, the 4R100 is different, yes, and never suffered from the TC lockup chatter, but ... it's still going to be what I use in mine...
Matter of fact, that reminds me, I really have to change mine...

Is it just me????
Well so long as the store brand says Mercron V on the bottle...then it meets Merc V specs since it is an active ford license. Wally World usually has 12-20 quarts of Merc V in their brand.
The only Mercon-V I could find locally in enough quantity to do a flush on my 4R100 was Valvoline brand at $6.33 per quart. And they didn't even have one quart extra. So if I spilled any I would be SOL. I just ordered two cases from a fluids wholesaler 50 miles away. Good thing they have free delivery, because it was still $5.41 a quart. Ouch.
I love Alaska, but sometimes the prices up here are ridiculous.

And Castrol still sells Dextron III/Mercon ATF like was originally speced for the 4R100. Not the Mercon V Ford claims is now magically ok for the 4R100 which was supposibly a no no
not that long ago.

This is why I only use Motorcraft Mercon V, because it's always available. Seems like there is always a Ford dealer where ever I go. I went to 4 different auto parts stores and NONE of them had 20 qts of the same brand that was Mercon V compatible. I figure if I am on the road and need fluid, then I can always get Motorcraft...the other brands will be hit and miss.
Go to any parts store and have them order a couple cases. To my knowledge, I can only get Mercon V in quarts thru our warehouse, but have not checked for 5 gal jugs. Since i'm an employee, we now have a 36 quart inventory on Valvoline Mercon 5 Synth, as well as Motorcraft mercon 5.
