Anybody found an aftermarket ATF that is compatible with Mercon SP besides Redline D6?
"Compatible" and actual spec compliant is two different worlds. The Big three makers own the spec to their various specialty ATF fluids and can issue out licenses’ to various blenders that can make fluids under license and have proper labeling. The trend of late with Ford (MERCRON SP), Chrysler (ATF+4) and GM (DEXRON IV) is that for the first few years of the new fluid spec introduction, they are the sole source providers under their house brand labels. ATF+4 licensing has just been issued and a few non OEM brands are being made. These are spec compliant.
The problem is some of the boutique synthetic makes like Redline , AIMSOIL and to a lesser degree Mobil one, make fluid that are "compatible" in their words but many times it is universal type fluid that is meant to cover multiple spec labels but does not do any of them adequately. In other words, using the redline stuff and your transmission grenades, the warranty can be voided and you have to seek recourse with redline and not Ford as the fluid was not a licensed by Ford to be made to a Mercron SP spec.
Anyways, last I heard, Ford was working on a "Universal" Mercron to make backward compatible to all previous Ford fluid types and eventually drop the MERCRON SP. I doubt you will see any true MERCRON SP spec compliant outside the Motorcraft brand.
