I've been looking into getting a newer bigger engine for my 71' f100. It has the 302. Found a guy who is selling a 390 out of a 61' ford falcon. will this work? the 390 has only 36k origional. he wants 350$. Good deal? I'm learning, thanks
Can a 390 be put in your truck, absolutely. Will it fit & match engine perches & tranny bell that are currently in there, not at all. You will need a FE engine setup of which the 390 is.
Secondly, How well do you know the seller and his creditability? I am pretty sure there were no 390s ever in 61 Falcons, the odometers tripped and started over after 100,000 miles so finding a 50 year old engine in a vehicle that never had on is highly unlikely, but not impossible.
Bill the ND can help with the facts on the engine.
$350.00 is not out of line for a good running 390, regardless.
Thank you so much! He did say that it has
36k original miles and garage'd for decades.
The car looks like that is true. So I guess next
To find a tranny? Any recommendations there?

--no 390s or any FE in ANY Falcon EVER from the factory. (A/FX drag racers don't count)
--no FE will FIT in a stock Falcon, other than the Falcon-badged Torino strippers Ford sold in the early '70s.
As per prior posts, this is highly unlikely.
Buying the whole Falcon would make sense if you want one, and if the engine isn't a hack job. A 390 in a Falcon wouldn't make much sense, as you have the "medium" flavored FE with all the weight and hassle--might as well go 427 or 428. A hot 289 or 302 would work better.
Back to your truck. A 351W will be a much easier swap than the FE. Engine mounts, accessories, even exhaust will swap.
It will have valve seats that work with unleaded, and will provide you with as much power as you have money.
Shoot. I meant a 61' ford galaxy guys.. Sorry, guess
That would make sense. I do like the galaxy
Better than the falcon I'll prob try and take
The whole car and then continue on the
Engine search. 351 you say?
Now that makes sense. Is this a 2 dr or 4dr? Is the whole car is a barn find with the low miles? Even a 4dr all original like that would be worth keeping in one piece.
351W--go down the the SBF forums and find several 351W build threads and there are also some 302 to 351W swap threads working right now as well.
4dr. The picture looks like it's in
Great great shape! Cream colored. Gonna call him
Tomorrow and see what he wants to do
Like I said I'm new to this but have been learning.
Managed to do a lot of major repairs on my
Truck with a book. Appreciate all the advice
Guys!
