Yesterday, I drove my 97 F150 4.6L from one parking lot to another parking lot down the street and it wouldn't start back up.
The battery is good and the alternator is good because I replaced them about 8 months ago and only has about 3K miles.
Today, I went back to the parking lot and did more checking up under the track. I started touching the cables that were on the starter to look for corrison. As soon as I touched this cable, see the pictures, it fell apart. I'm guessing this is an original part and all the salt during the winter season made it corrode.
Do I need to replace the entire starter or is there a cheaper fix for this?
I'd replace it. Corrosion between the strands make any attempt to reconnect that wire likely to fail and the starter is probably original. A good starter is MUCH cheaper than a tow truck bill.
Inspect the wiring and connectors while you are in the area.
Bring in the old starter when you buy a replacement since there is a core charge in most cases.
